Experience a fun and unpredictable activity that reveals a different way to enjoy an adventure destination. You can currently practice this activity on the open beaches of La Paz.
Stand up paddle (SUP) is a sport that has gained international popularity in recent years, and La Paz is no exception. With its calm and clear waters, the beaches of La Paz are the ideal place to practice this sport. Sheltered bays, mangrove channels, and panoramic views of the city are common landscapes for those who practice stand up paddle in La Paz.
On Board Baja, one of the companies specialized in this sport and based in La Paz, shares some tips to ensure you have a great experience on your next SUP outing:
1. Use a Leash
Attach the board's leash to your ankle so you can easily retrieve the board if you fall, and it won’t drift away with the current.
2. Wear a Life Jacket
Wear your life jacket—it can keep you safe in case you fall into deep water and have trouble getting back on the board.
3. Hold the Paddle Properly
Place one hand at the end of the shaft and the paddle over your head. With the other hand, grip the paddle and slide it until both arms form a 90-degree angle.
4. Enter the Water Carefully
Enter the beach cautiously, being careful not to step on anything, and place the board in the water once it reaches at least knee depth. This helps prevent damage to the board’s fin.
5. Position Your Feet Correctly
Place your feet parallel to each other at the center of the board—usually where the handle is located. Stand up slowly: first go from your knees, then one foot at a time, maintaining balance and enjoying the experience.
As always, practice makes perfect. So on your next trip to La Paz, don’t miss the chance to try stand up paddle in our calm waters.
